Ranger
our old man puppy
Every family has that one dog who feels less like a pet and more like someone who’s just been with you forever. That’s Ranger, an English Cream Retriever, my shadow, my old soul with the gentlest eyes and the softest way. He’s always carried himself like he arrived wiser than the rest of us, as if he skipped the puppy stage entirely and came pre-installed with good manners, intuition, and a calm center. He’s 9 years old.
We used to call him Eeyore, like in Winnie the Pooh. Not because he was gloomy, but because he had this unbothered way of moving through the world. A dog who never rushed. A dog who seemed to know things.
Ranger has always been easy. Easy to train. Easy to love. Easy to live with.
He loves the beach more than anything. He trots right up to us in the sand, sits down, and gives us what I can only describe as a “thank you”. It’s a look, a little sigh.
And my God, the way he loves peanut butter. It might be the only time he forgets to act like a gentleman.
At home, he sleeps on my bed like he owns the house. He somehow takes up the exact amount of space I need which is exactly what it feels like to live with him. Just right.
Something shifted in Ranger this year in 2025. He started running on his walks. Actually running. He started playing. He got fit.
We added a few new supplements, and they worked wonders. Suddenly he wasn’t the “Eeyore” of the group anymore. He had a spark. A little swagger, even. It felt like watching someone you love come back to themselves. It was a new lease on life, and he took it.
Ranger is the most empathic dog I’ve ever known. If Scout gets in trouble, Ranger can’t handle it. He slinks over and tries to smooth the energy in the room.
He’s the peacekeeper, the one who wants everyone okay, always. If dogs could be therapists, Ranger would have a three-month waitlist.
Watching Ranger with Scout is its own sitcom. He has the patience of a saint. Scout can be high-energy, impulsive, every younger sibling trait bundled into a single furry body and Ranger just takes it in stride.
Ranger isn’t dramatic. He doesn’t demand anything. He simply is. Kind. Grateful. Tenderhearted. He’s the soul of our home, reminding all of us that the best companions aren’t the ones with the biggest personalities but the ones with the biggest hearts. And Ranger has the biggest heart of all.
